Il brano We are the world compie esattamente 35 anni. Esattamente il 7 marzo del 1985 debuttava la canzone scritta da Michael Jackson, Lionel Richie e Stevie Wonder, e interpretata da ben 46 cantanti, tra i quali Bruce Springsteen, Ray Charles, Bob Dylan, Stevie Wonder, Paul Simon, Billy Joel, Tina Turner e Cindy Lauper.
Il tutto ebbe inizio con il cartello “Lasciate il vostro ego fuori dalla porta”: un invito con cui il produttore americano Quincy Jones accoglieva i più grandi cantanti del mondo negli studi degli A&M di Los Angeles. Obiettivo era raccogliere più soldi possibile per la situazione drammatica in Etiopia.
Il successo della canzone è stato straordinario: ottocentomila copie, 20 milioni vendute finora e un ricavato di 60 milioni di dollari in beneficenza all’Africa. Peraltro non solo andò in mondovisione il 13 luglio 1985 come finale del Live Aid, uno dei più grandi eventi rock del mondo, al John F. Kennedy Stadium di Philadelphia davanti a 100mila spettatori, ma ottenne anche il Grammy Award come ‘canzone dell’anno’,’disco dell’anno’ e come ‘miglior performance di un duo o gruppo vocale pop.
